Push-in connectors are a great alternative to wire nuts when you are tight on space.
It's standard practice for electricians to leave at least six inches of wire in wall boxes. That way, you've got enough slack to install a new outlet or switch. But if you're short on wire in a wall box, these push-in connectors allow you to splice in extra wire and are an easy alternative to wire nuts. Electrical Cable Clips

After opening up a wall box and finding just a an inch or two of wire, your best bet is to connect an extra length of wire so you've got something you can easily work with. Wire nuts are the best choice in this situation but they can take up valuable space when crammed inside an already tight wall box. Use push-in connectors which are spring loaded to hold each end of the wire in place. You just insert a bare end of wire and you're connected.
